Innovation Canvas

Purpose

The Innovation Canvas structures the controlled integration of new solutions into the existing clinical system constellation.

Innovation in CARE-IT does not mean introducing as many new technologies as possible.
It means ensuring that new solutions can be selected appropriately and integrated repeatably, rapidly, safely, and sustainably into the established care environment.

The Innovation Canvas prevents innovation-driven fragmentation and protects structural stability.

Guiding Question

How can this new solution be integrated into the existing clinical system constellation in a repeatable, safe, and sustainably operable manner?

Structural Effect

The Innovation Canvas:

  • connects innovation with system architecture
  • aligns new solutions with clinical purpose
  • evaluates constellation-wide dependencies
  • clarifies regulatory operator responsibility
  • makes integration consequences transparent
  • ensures transition from project to sustainable operation

It operationalizes P8 – Innovation Capability from an Operator Perspective.

Without structural integration logic, innovation generates instability rather than progress.

When Is It Applied?

  • Introduction of new technologies
  • Pilot initiatives
  • Strategic innovation programs
  • Expansion of existing clinical system constellations
  • Evaluation of AI-based or data-driven solutions
  • Major functional extensions of existing systems

The Innovation Canvas is not an idea-generation tool.
It is a governance instrument for controlled evolution.

Typical Misapplications

  • Focusing on pilot operation without operational integration
  • Innovation decisions without architectural assessment
  • Vendor-driven acceleration without constellation review
  • Absence of explicit responsibility allocation
  • Treating innovation as a temporary exception to governance rules

Innovation is not an exception to governance —
it must be embedded within it.

Relation to Principles and Domains

Primary alignment:

  • P8 – Innovation Capability from an Operator Perspective
  • D6 – Innovation Capability & Controlled Evolution

Secondary alignment:

  • P2 – Holistic System Responsibility
  • D1 – Clinical Orientation & Benefit Governance
  • D3 – Responsibility & Governance
  • D5 – Lifecycle & Operational Capability

The artifact ensures that innovation strengthens — rather than destabilizes — the clinical system constellation.
